| Santorini's Ancient Thera |
|
Santorini's Ancient TheraAt an altitude of 370 meters, the site is a natural fortress which made the city very difficult to reach from the sea while at the same time it is a perfect point for observation. The ancient Thera is located in the south east part of the island, adjacent to the beach of Kamari. The public and private buildings of the city were built along the main street which linked the north-east and south-east extremities of the site. Most of the ruins that stand today belong to the Hellinistic period, during which Ancient Thera was prosperous. The Agora (the gathering place) occupies a prominent site within the city and it is surrounded by public buildings. Other sites within Ancient Thera, worthwhile to visit is the Theatre, Vassileios Stoa, the Gymnasium, the Sactuaries and the Temenos of Artemidorus. |
